About Me
I have spent over 20 years working with all types of horses, ponies and donkeys. I developed my handling and training skills whilst working for World Horse Welfare, a rescue and rehabilitation centre in Norfolk. Many of the horses who arrived at the centre had suffered some form of neglect or trauma and this gave me invaluable experience in rehabilitating horses with often quite complex behavioural problems. I then spent 10 years working at a busy, mixed veterinary practice as a receptionist, often observing lameness investigations and assisting in the daily management of the patients while they were visiting the practice.
I currently work as an Equine Behaviour Coordinator for Redwings Horse Sanctuary where I train horses to be accepting of husbandry tasks such as having their feet trimmed by the farrier, injections and worming. I also work with semi feral ponies, gaining their trust and training them to wear head collars, be accepting of a human touch and help them adjust to living in a more domesticated environment. It is in this role that I have been able to delve further into positive reinforcement training methods.
My Training Methods

I am primarily a positive reinforcement trainer and I use learning theory to ensure I always aim to set the horse up to succeed. Firstly, I will assess the environment and any other factors that may be contributing to a behaviour. My first method of training will always be to use positive, reward based training and the speed at which the training progresses is dictated by the horse.
My aim is for training sessions to be both interesting and rewarding for horse and human, ensuring we all stay safe, focused and consistent in our approach.
